For many people a safari holiday is the ultimate trip of a lifetime; a dream holiday with the chance to witness some of natures’ most incredible creatures within their natural surroundings. Safari is the Swahili word for ‘journey’ and choosing your own safari journey will come down to what you would most like to experience for your journey of a lifetime.
The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is the place to go if big cats are your thing. Leopards, lions and cheetahs prowl the area and the Reserve is often used when television companies want to make documentaries about these magnificent animals. Located on the border of Tanzania and the Mara River, home to hippos and crocodiles, runs through the Reserve and the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania can be seen at the southern end. You can also see giraffes, impalas, wildebeest, zebras, warthogs and elephants to name just some of the other animals living in the area. The best time to visit is generally considered to be between July and October.
The Zambezi Valley in the Zambia is a new and upcoming area for safari holidays so it is perhaps not the best place to choose if you are after a more traditional safari experience. For intrepid explorers and those who like their wildlife wild with a capital W then this may be the place. The area is vast with the Zambezi River running, through filled with crocs and hippos. Only a few tour operators are working in this area so you can expect a remote but comfortable stay on this safari holiday. This area also offer specialist safaris for example bird safaris which enable you to see some of Africa’s amazing birdlife or fish safaris that take place by boat or canoe.
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is home to an enormous amount of wildlife and is the perfect destination for a traditional safari holiday. The area’s grasslands make this the perfect place for spotting all kinds of animals such as wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and of course the incredible big cats. The Park is enormous and divided into three areas – the name Serengeti means ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language.
The Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of the oldest and largest wildlife parks in Africa. It makes for the perfect traditional safari holiday, as you will find all the expected safari animals living in this area. You can expect to see lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos to name just some. The park runs along the border of Mozambique and Zimbabwe and is also home to the Crocodile River, which as the name suggests is home to these dangerous but beautiful creatures.
