The Lake District – Recommended Outdoor Activities

Also called Lakeland, the Lake District is the perfect place to visit if you enjoy outdoor activities. With stunning scenery, mountains and lakes to explore there is no better destination for those who love getting out and about in the great outdoors. There is an outdoor activity here to suit people of all ages and all levels of fitness. Some people come to the area to take part in competitions, others just to enjoy a gentle walk in beautiful surroundings.

The area is probably most famous for its walking opportunities with England’s five highest mountains located here. There are walks for all levels of ability from gentle strolls around the lakes to climbing the highest peaks and walks that will suit families – it is no wonder then that The Lake District is voted time and time again as the favorite destination for walkers. Many books have been written that map out the various routes you can take and these provide a reliable guide to the area.

The Lake District is a great place for cyclists of all kinds and the quiet country lanes make this an ideal place to visit if you enjoy on-road cycling. Of course the opportunities are endless for off-road cycling and this area is the perfect location for those who enjoy mountain biking as there are plenty of off-road routes that will give thrill seekers their much needed fix!

With a name like The Lake District it is obvious that water based sports and activities are going to be popular in this area. The very brave can take part in The Great North Swim which is an annual open water swimming competition held at Lake Windermere every year. There are also year round opportunities for open water swimming in the Lake District but this is a sport that requires lots of safety observations and is not recommended for the inexperienced. Keen canoeists and kayakers can enjoy themselves here, as can windsurfers water-skiers and sailors. If you prefer a more gentle approach to water sports than boat hire is available at some of the lakes in the area.

Thrill seekers who enjoy heights will find lots of opportunities for rock climbing and abseiling in The Lake District. The area is thought to have been the birthplace for rock climbing and there are climbs available for all levels of experience and also places where you can learn. Underneath the lakes and mountains there are endless caves and the area is also good for those who enjoy caving and potholing.
